Places that are haunted or possess some spirits are everybody’s favourite late-night discussion. Take a look at Mumbai’s spookiest.
- Mukesh Mills, Colaba
One of the most famous haunted places in Mumbai, Mukesh Mills is an old structure that was destroyed in 1870 by a fire. Since then, it has been deserted completely and is said to be haunted. The Mills are a famous location for Bollywood shoots but most film-stars are spooked out by the location. There have been many incidents on sets and shooting is wrapped up as early as possible.
- Aarey Milk Colony
Covered by trees on both sides, this looks like a haven. But it is sheer hell for drivers taking the road late at night. There have been multiple accidents on the road and all the drivers claim that they were stopped by a woman in a saree carrying a child who asked them for a lift and then disappeared. Some claim that the woman chases the cars if they do not stop. There are also reports of a child running and then disappearing or old men disappearing. Drivers avoid it as far as possible late in the night.
- 8th Floor, Grand Paradi Towers

The first incident was that of a couple jumping from their flat, followed by other family members the next year. There have been reports of maids committing suicide in the building and other freak accidents claiming the lives of residents. Despite numerous pujas and other methods used to ward off spirits, the towers still remain one of the most haunted places in the city.
- Tower of Silence
A place where the deceased members of the Parsi community are left to be eaten by vultures (Zoroastrians believe that they are returning to nature what they had taken), this place is deserted and believed to be haunted at night. Located on Malabar Hill, hardly anyone ever ventures here post dark. Although there are no sightings reported, the people passing by sense an unease and feel uncomfortable.
- Sanjay Gandhi National Park
A favourite among hikers and nature enthusiasts, Sanjay Gandhi National park is famous for its wild animal sightings. But the park is also considered to be haunted and there have been sightings of a hitchhiker vanishing in to thin air witnessed by picnickers. While many doubt the authenticity of these statements and say they are spread to keep people away at night, the forest guards vouch for the spooky hitchhiker.
- The D’Souza Chawl, Mahim
This chawl is said to be possessed by the spirit of a woman who once lived here. One day while filling water from the well in the chawl, the wall of the well collapsed and she fell inside and died. Since then, her ghost is said to haunt the chawl. However, she does not harm anyone and is visible only at night.
- Vrindavan Society, Thane
Located right behind the Thane creek, this society has one of the funniest ghosts. The ghost loves to slap people! A man is said to have committed suicide in one of the buildings here and since then, the security guards have had weird incidents. Someone slaps them during the night if they doze off, or whispers in their ears during the night patrol.
- Poonam Chambers, Worli
First the bomb blasts of 1993 and then a wall of the B wing collapsing in 1997, the building is said to house not one but many ghosts of the dead trapped under the rubble in both these incidents. People working late nights in the B wing are often forbidden from taking the stairs at night if they work late. The watchmen too complain of a presence and the security guards of offices are spooked by rattling doors and knocks at night.
- Nasserwanj Wadi, Mahim
Situated close to Mahim station, the ghost haunting this place is said to be the spirit of the murdered owner. The owner was burnt to death and is said to torment anyone who crosses his path post midnight. The well, close to which he was burnt, has been covered but it hasn’t helped. This is one job-loving ghost! According to people, a courtroom of the Bombay High Court is haunted by a bilingual ghost who keeps cursing and causing terror during any murder trial. The ghost has been creating havoc for the past 30 years. We wonder if the ghost could perhaps assist the judge in solving a few crimes quicker? The judicial process might just get speedier.

There have been many accidents reported on the route as drivers try to veer off to avoid her or are chased by her.
- St. John’s Baptist Church, Andheri
This is one horrifying story of exorcism and ghosts. The church is said to have housed the ghost of a young bride. The ghost would torment people who ventured near the church. In 1977, the locals called a priest to perform an exorcism on the church. As the procedure began, there were first sounds of maniacal laughter followed by constant sobbing. After sometime, the sobbing stopped and there was a loud splash that came from a pond nearby. The next day, all the fish in the pond were discovered dead. Though there have been no incidents since then, no one ventures into or near the church.
